San Gimignano
To reach San Gimignano we will pass through the most wonderful Tuscan countryside — classic rolling hills, neatly-rowed vineyards and silvery-green olive groves, a living picture postcard!

San Gimignano, “the Manhattan of Tuscany”, is best known for its watchtowers that were a display of power and prosperity in Medieval times. Although only 14 of San Gimignano’s original 72 towers remain the effect is still dramatic and will give you lots of great photo opps.

Take your time strolling the narrow cobbled streets and open piazzas, and be prepared to step back in time. Art lovers may wish to spend some time in the church of Sant’Agostino to see the charming cycle of frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli as well as a substantial selection of paintings and sculpture by some of Italy’s major Medieval and Renaissance artists. San Gimignano is also home to award-winning gelato; look for it in the main piazza.

The winery
If you are passionate about wine you’ll want to consider the optional wine tasting at a boutique winery in the Chianti Colli Senesi. The winery, I Balzini, is a classic Tuscan estate in a picturesque location. They produce high quality, award-winning red wines and rosè (no white wines).

If you opt for the winery you’ll still have enough time in Florence to cover the major highlights. If you skip the winery you’ll have time for lunch in Florence.

Florence
In Florence you will experience a completely different architectural esthetic — the elegance and beauty of the Renaissance. Whether you are interested in architecture, history, food or shopping, Florence has a wealth to offer. Sights include:

  • Piazzale Michelangelo (photo stop for panoramic shots of the city)
  • Santa Croce (when possible)
  • Piazza del Duomo (cathedral, baptistery, bell tower)
  • Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio
  • Porcellino Market, Ponte Vecchio

A note about galleries in Florence: Because time is limited in Florence it’s a bit of a squeeze to include the Accademia gallery, especially if you’ve opted for the winery. There really is not time for the Uffizi.
