Lucca, Pisa & the Grotta del Vento

This tour lasts approximately 9 hours.

This day is packed with wonders of man and nature, fun for the whole family!
Stroll or bike along Lucca's ancient walls, "hold up" the Leaning Tower of Pisa,
and feel the power of the wind in the Grotta del Vento as you marvel
at shimmering stalactites and stalagmites.

Lucca (60 minutes from La Spezia)

Lucca's imposing exterior walls have been transformed from ancient citadel to urban greenspace where pedestrians can stroll or rent bikes to enjoy the scene. The city is brimming with handsome architecture and attractions. You can appreciate Lucca's ancient past at Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, site of a former Roman amphitheater, and its Medieval history at many interesting churches featuring bold, striped designs and intricate facades dating back to the 13th Century. Art lovers will want to take a few minutes see the sculpture of Ilaria del Carretto, deemed the most beautiful funerary monument in Italy and a work of art to compare with Michelangelo's David.

On foot you can:

  • Take a walk from one lovely, open piazza to the next
  • Browse the beautiful shops along the exclusive Via Fillungo
  • Stroll atop the wall, or rent a bike for a few Euro and cruise it!
  • Stop in at a friendly wine bar and sample some local vino
  • Enjoy some traditional Lucchese cooking at one of the many excellent restaurants
  • Go on a culinary-centered tour with a private guide Optional; must be prearranged; additional fee.

If going on foot is difficult for some members of your party, we can take you through the winding old narrow streets by car (a privilege in this pedestrian-only centre).

The Grotta del Vento (55 minutes from Lucca)

The Grotta del Vento is an amazing feat of nature sure to delight everyone. The shimmering stalactites and stalagmites, crystal clear underground pools and rivers, and fascinating mud formations were formed over gazillions of years by water dripping through the limestone.

NOTE: The Grotta del Vento is really neat, but you could omit it to spend more time in Lucca & Pisa..

Pisa (75 minutes from the Grotta del Vento)

In the “Field of Miracles” you will find not only the world’s most famous bell tower but also the cathedral, baptistery and cemetery — all beautiful and interesting.

Make sure to bring your camera and see how creative you can be “holding up” the Leaning Tower!  You can climb the Tower if you wish.
Climbing the Tower is optional, must be pre-booked, and incurs and additional fee. Children under 8 are not permitted to climb.

Lovers of horticulture may wish to visit the 500 year old botanical gardens.

NOTE: The order of the day can be reversed, especially if you want to climb the Tower or visit the botanical gardens in the hotter months.
