If you’ve been to Rome already and are looking for something different we have lots of day trips in the inland area east of the port. In ancient times this territory was the land of the Etruscans, the fascinating civilization that inhabited central Italy before the Romans. Other beautiful and interesting destinations in the Etruscan countryside include Civita di Bagnoregio (the Medieval ghost town), Villa Lante (splendid gardens), Viterbo (amazing Medieval architecture), and Montefiascone (stunning views of Lake Bolsena). Orvieto is also a wonderful destination, but it is a bit of a hike (about a 90-min drive).
