Excursions from the ports of Naples and Sorrento

Of course the big attractions from these ports are Pompei, Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento, and the Amalfi coast. On the Amalfi coast Positano, the town of Amalfi, and Ravello are the most popular destinations. Scroll down for an alphabetical listing with images.

If you are fortunate enough to DOCK IN SORRENTO you will benefit from shorter driving times to the Amalfi coast and a much shorter ferry ride to Capri.

If you DOCK IN NAPLES prepare for a good chunk of travel time to get to the Amalfi coast or Sorrento (for example, 4 hours of driving time for Pompei-Sorrento-Positano). The Amalfi coast is spectacular but (car sickness alert!) it is a long and winding road with (fear of heights alert!) precipitous drops to the sea.

For FAMILIES we recommend Pompei & Mt. Vesuvius, with lunch at a winery at the foot of the volcano or pizza in Naples. Also good for anyone looking for a more active tour without so much driving. Pompei & Positano is another good family-friendly tour, and a better choice if you prefer beaches to volcanoes.

Is Capri calling? We advise budgeting a whole day with a private guide to it, especially in high season. Trying to do other things (such as Sorrento) in combination with Capri is too much of a mad dash and very expensive. Your guide will pick you up at the ship and escort you on the ferry, which eliminates a lot of hassle and stress.

For those interested in HISTORIC DWELLINGS or AMAZING GARDENS you can’t beat Ravello.

For those with LIMITED MOBILITY — sadly, your choices are somewhat limited. Sorrento is relatively flat, as is the main piazza area of Ravello.

From Naples most excursions last 9 hours. If you go to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast you will need it.
