Michelangelo’s Footsteps 4-hr walking tour

On our private walking tour of Florence you follow in Michelangelo’s footsteps to discover the city that shaped him, and to view his most famous works.

DETAILS: MICHELANGELO’S FOOTSTEPS 4-hr walking tour

Our itinerary begins in Piazza San Marco, where Michelangelo’s early training took place at the Humanist Academy, founded by the Medici family.

Next we’ll view Michelangelo’s David, his most famous work, housed in the Accademia gallery. We find our young hero at the end of a corridor where some curious works by Michelangelo are also displayed: the Prisoners, male figures that seem to be attempting to free themselves from their marble confinement.

A stroll through the Medici district is next, passing the somber basilica of San Lorenzo on our way to the Medici chapels, where the New Sacristy designed by Michelangelo is located. If the sacristy is open you will also have the opportunity to see the beautiful staircase he designed for the Laurentian Library.

Continuing on to Piazza del Duomo we’ll consider the splendid, massive dome of the cathedral that inspired Michelangelo’s design of the dome of St. Peter’s in Rome. At Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, an exceptionally beautiful gallery, we’ll view a unique Pietà, sculpted by the master at the end of his life.

Your last stop with your guide will be the church of Santa Croce, where Michelangelo is buried. This is also the burial site of Galileo, Machiavelli, Ghiberti and Rossini. The church itself has an unusual facade featuring an enormous star of David included by Jewish architect Niccolo Matas.
